Week Nine

Lesson 9: Living vs. Nonliving

SKL1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how organisms (alive and not alive) and non-living objects are grouped.

a. Construct an explanation based on observations to recognize the differences between organisms and nonliving objects.

What is a living thing?

- Living things are things that are alive.

- Plants, people, and animals are called living things.

Look at this little fox in the picture. This fox is a living thing. -->

- The fox is living because it needs food, water and air to live. It can move and breathe. Just like you, this fox will grow into an adult.

What is a non living thing?

- Non living things are things that are not alive.

- Rocks, books and toys are called non living things.

The books in this picture are non living -->

- These books are not living because they do not need food, water or air. Books cannot move, grow or breathe.

There are living and nonliving things all around you!

<--- Look at this dragonfly. It is a bug, or insect. Do you think it is living or nonliving?

This dragonfly is a living thing. It eats other little bugs like mosquitoes as their food. They fly around and help gardeners and the environment.

An environment is everything around us. Things like the air, soil, water, animals and plants make up an environment.

Dragonflies sometimes like to sit on rocks and enjoy the sun!

But are rocks living or nonliving?

Rocks are nonliving because they are not alive. They do not need food, water or air. Rocks also don't move or breathe.

What about plants? This might seem like a tricky one, but a plant is a living thing.

Plants cover a lot of our Earth, and they need water and air to survive.

You can't see plants move, but they do grow... And that is one of the things that makes plants a living thing.

<--- What about this teddy bear?

Can you tell me if it is living or nonliving?
