Week Sixteen

Lesson 16: Observations & data continued

S7L4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to examine the interdependence of organisms with one another and their environments.

a. Construct an explanation for the patterns of interactions observed in different ecosystems in terms of the relationships among and between organisms and abiotic components of the ecosystem

Organisms such as birds, adapt to their environment to survive. The environment consists of abiotic and biotic interactions. Abiotic factors are the non-living components of an ecosystem, while biotic factors are the living components.

Examples of abiotic factors:

- air

- water

- wind

- soil

- temperature

Examples of biotic factors:

- plants/animals/any living organism

Interactions between abiotic and biotic can refer to something like a mammal growing thick fur in their cold environment to stay warm. Or when dragonflies or lizards sunbathe on rocks to keep their bodies warm. But it really all starts from organisms such as plants and algae that absorb nutrients from their environment to provide for other larger animals or consumers. The nutrients provided from the environment go to plants, then to other animals, which is how these nutrients and energy cycle through the abiotic to biotic world.

Another example of these interactions can be recognized between birds, insects and plants. When plants are pollinated by birds or insects such as butterflies, they benefit from this so they are able to reproduce. At the same time the birds and pollinators benefit as well, because they also get nutrients and food from the nectar.

The data recorded above was collected from February 10th to 16th. The same methods as the previous week of data collection were used. Over this period of time, due to more rainy weather, less birds on average were seen than the previous weeks. This time, the maximum number of birds seen was 4, most prominent in the afternoon between 12:00 and 2:00pm.
