Basic Needs of Birds
- Urbanization is one of the main things that affect birds in our communities today. Like any living thing, birds need food, water and shelter to survive. Providing food, water and shelter for birds in places like your yard can attract and provide a habitat for them.
- Trees, shrubs and flowers provide great shelter and help the birds escape predators and harsh weather. One or more birdhouses surrounded by greenery would definitely provide backyard birds with needed shelter.
- Bird feeders are also commonly used to attract birds. Placing a feeder in your yard filled with mealworms, seeds and grains is a great source of food for them. These feeders also need to be maintained and kept clean & fresh. If they are not cleaned, then harmful bacteria can grow overtime and negatively impact those birds.
- Providing water, is another great way to attract birds to your yard. Whether it's just a bird bath or fountain, it gives them access to water for survival. Surrounding the area with flowers, or even if you already have a garden would be beneficial to the birds and you, since they are pollinators, positively impacting your garden and themselves.
The data recorded above was collected from February 24th to March 2nd. The same methods as the previous week of data collection were used. Over this period of time the weather progressively got warmer, and there was little rain throughout the week. Around the same amount of birds were spotted compared to last week. This time, the number of birds at the bird bath in the morning rather than afternoon, increased.
